How do I activate location sharing?

In order to track location and receive Location Alerts, location sharing must be allowed on the protected device.


✅ To allow location sharing on iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app on the protected device

  2. Scroll down and tap Privacy & Security

  3. Tap Location Services

  4. Make sure Location Services is turned on

  5. Scroll down and select Canopy Shield from the list

  6. Tap Always under Allow Location Access


✅ To allow location sharing on Android:

  1. Open the Settings app on the protected device

  2. Scroll down and tap Location

  3. Tap App permissions

  4. Tap Canopy Shield from the list

  5. Select Allow all the time


❗ Having trouble with location not updating?

If location is not updating in the Canopy dashboard, try the following:

🔍 1. Verify Location Sharing is Enabled on the protected device

Double-check the settings above to ensure:

  • Canopy Shield is set to Always (on iOS) or Allow all the time (on Android).

  • Location Services is turned on globally on the device.

🔋 2. Disable Battery Optimization (Android Only)

Battery-saving settings may limit location updates in the background:

  • Open Settings > Apps > Canopy Shield

  • Tap Battery or Battery Optimization

  • Set Canopy to Not optimized or Unrestricted

📡 3. Check Network Connection

Location updates require an internet connection. Make sure:

  • The device is connected to Wi-Fi or Mobile Data

  • Airplane Mode is off

🛑 4. Check if Location Permissions Were Revoked

Sometimes OS updates or app updates can reset permissions.
Revisit the Location Settings (as shown above) and make sure the correct permissions are still applied.

🔁 5. Restart the Device

In some cases, a simple restart helps reestablish services needed for background location updates.

📍 6.Open Canopy Shield on the Protected Device

Opening the app can help refresh the background connection and prompt a location update.
