Content Categories are groups of apps and websites that share similar themes, purposes, or subject matter. Canopy uses these categories to help parents and managers easily control what types of content are allowed or blocked on protected devices.
Each category can be configured independently based on your family or organization’s needs.
The Messaging Apps category includes messaging apps and websites such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Hangouts, and more.
The default SMS messaging app on the protected device is not included in this category, since it is considered a system app.
This category controls browser activity, search engines, and unknown/uncategorized apps.
It includes browser apps such as Chrome, Firefox, Dolphin Browser, default device browsers, and similar services.
It also temporarily includes apps or websites that have not yet been categorized.
This separation allows users to block or heavily protect browsers while still allowing search engines under a different protection level if desired.
The AI Technology category includes websites and apps that use artificial intelligence to:
Examples include AI chatbots, AI image generators, and other AI-powered tools.
While these tools can be helpful, they may also expose users to inaccurate or inappropriate content.
This category includes app stores, download services, cloud storage, and file sharing platforms.
App stores such as the Apple App Store and Google Play Store are included in this subcategory.
The Email category includes email apps and websites such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Mailbox, and more.
The Finance category includes banking, investments, payment systems, and business-related financial services.
Examples include banking apps, stock market services, digital wallets, and mobile payment apps.
The Games category includes gaming apps and websites such as Angry Birds, Candy Crush, NBA Live, and more.
This category includes general informational services, educational content, hospitality, public information, and reference resources.
The News category includes news apps and websites such as CNN, BBC, CBS News, The New York Times, and more.
The Photo Editing category includes camera apps, media players, photo galleries, image editing apps, and video editing tools.

The Remote Connections category includes remote access and remote support tools, FTP clients, and remote camera access applications.
The Shopping category includes online shopping apps and websites such as Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, Target, and more.
The Social Networking and Dating category includes social networking apps and websites such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, and more.
The Sports category includes sports, fitness, and wellness apps and websites such as Fitbit, Google Fit, ESPN, NFL Now, and more.
The TV and Streaming category includes apps and websites that stream video content, such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Vimeo, and more.
The YouTube category includes the YouTube website and apps that access or play YouTube videos, such as YouTube Kids, TubeMate, PlayTube, and similar services.
The Religions category includes non-Jewish religious apps and websites.
This category includes pornography, nudity, violence, proxy avoidance, drugs, and other adult-related content.
By default, all subcategories are blocked, similar to the main category.
Any unknown or uncategorized app or website is temporarily classified under Uncategorized Apps until properly reviewed and categorized.
