The Canopy Security Certificate is a secure digital file that helps Canopy Shield filter and monitor encrypted content — such as websites that use HTTPS. This certificate allows Canopy to scan and block inappropriate or harmful content that would otherwise be hidden due to encryption.
Without the certificate, Canopy may not be able to fully protect your device — especially when using popular browsers like Chrome or Firefox.
You’ll need to install the security certificate on most Android devices to ensure full filtering.
On Android versions before 15, the certificate is installed during setup (in the background).
On Android 15 and above, the system has changed — and you’ll need to choose between two setup methods after installing Canopy.
In most cases, the certificate is installed automatically during the regular Canopy installation process. You don’t need to take any extra steps unless you skipped or canceled the process.
In some cases, the certificate may not install automatically. This can happen due to device-specific storage handling or permission restrictions. If the certificate wasn’t installed, follow these steps to install it manually:
Open a browser (like Chrome) on the protected device.
Visit this page: rril.org
This is a secure internal page that will prompt the certificate download if it’s missing.
When prompted to download the certificate, tap Download or Save.
Once downloaded, go to:
Settings > Security > Encryption & Credentials
(The path may vary slightly depending on the device brand or Android version. Use the search bar in Settings if needed.)
Tap Install a certificate > CA Certificate > Install anyway (if warned).
Navigate to your Downloads folder and select the file named myca.crt
.
If asked, enter your device’s PIN or unlock pattern.
After installation is complete, you can return to browsing – secure filtering is now active.
After you install the Canopy Shield app, the first time you open a browser, you’ll see a setup landing page. This page offers two options:
This is the simplest way to ensure safe browsing. The browser comes with the certificate built-in, and no manual setup is required.
To install:
Tap Install Canopy Browser on the setup screen.
You’ll be taken to the Google Play Store.
Install the browser and make it your default browser to ensure safe redirections work correctly.
If you prefer to continue using your existing browser (e.g., Chrome or Firefox), you’ll need to install the certificate manually.

👉 How to Install the Canopy Browser on Android 15 and Above
If content is not being filtered, or you’re seeing unusual behavior in your browser, the certificate might not be installed correctly. Here’s what to check:
Did you skip the certificate setup or close the setup screen?
Are you using Chrome, Firefox, or another browser with strict security rules?
Have you restarted the device since setup?
Try re-installing the certificate or switching to the Canopy Chromium browser to verify protection is working.
Firefox handles certificates differently than Chrome or Chromium-based browsers. Even if the certificate is installed on the device, Firefox may not recognize it unless you manually import it into Firefox’s own certificate store.
📘 See these guides for help:
Q: Is the certificate safe to install?
Yes. The Canopy certificate is signed and trusted. It is only used to help detect and filter inappropriate content — it does not access passwords or personal data.
Q: Why do I need this on Android but not on iOS?
Android requires a certificate to filter secure (HTTPS) content in browsers. iOS handles things differently and does not require a security certificate for most of Canopy's protection to work.
